I remember one frozen December as I was walking from my vehicle going to my office. It had just snowed, so the road was covered in threatening slippery ice. I found myself just about slipping with every step.

Then the most amazing thing happened...

I noticed this kid who was probably17 years old skiing on top of the ice. His hands behind his back moving calmly and elegantly across the ice, one foot after another in a skating fashion. He had no concern for the ice at all.

In my amazement, I smiled at him pretending I was not afraid and watched him go by. What was interesting regarding this was that I knew how to Ice skate and i have been to the ice ring on many occasion. So I decided to copy the boy.

Almost instantly the ice did not feel so threatening. I knew how to ice skate and I had realised that I in fact had the skill to master it. All I had to do was to employ this skill.

This small tale gives a powerful perspective into how to work with stress better. You see, the manner in which we deal with any difficult scenarios we are threatened by is fully decided by how vulnerable we feel towards those situations and our impressions of just how well equipped we are to handle the situations.

If we can take a step back and re-assess those circumstances objectively, we might just realise that we do actually have the assets to cope with the situations; it's only that the intense emotions initiated by stress had shrouded our decision making process.
