By Alison Wilcox

Etiquette refers to the form of conduct as accepted by a given society. It is a vital tool in the upbringing of a child as it creates a good foundation towards their future character and personality. This means that good behavior needs to be established early in life so that it becomes part and parcel of their daily activity. Etiquette for children is the set of behaviors that is expected from a child as regards their relationship with other people.

Ethical conduct is defining virtue for any human being. It reflects who we are as it is often portrayed in virtually all the activities we undertake. This makes it very important as such all adults should challenge themselves to be good role models as far as the instilling of good mannerisms is concerned. A child will more likely copy what they see than apply what they are asked to.

One of the areas in which we can incorporate commendable habits include being willing to assist in duties that one is capable of doing without having to be asked. Another area is that of generosity. We should learn to share what we have with others who lack is a rewarding act. In addition, youngsters should be trained to greet people respectfully especially elders every time they meet.

Apart from being placed under the care of a responsible adult, a child also needs a favorable environment that will help reinforce positive morals. Preferably, there should be well laid out rules and regulations to guide the child. Rewarding good behaviors and condemning the negative ones is one way in which etiquette patterns can be shaped.

Courtesy is very important in any form of interaction. It should be taught to children as early as possible. A child should be told that it is good to show appreciation for anything good by saying thank you. It is also good to apologize when one has wronged another person. Excusing oneself when in a meeting or during a meal when seeking leave is polite. All these forms of behavior serve to build healthier relationships.

Children should be taught the importance of respecting other people be it their peers or their seniors. Every creature in this world is beautifully and wonderfully made by God and therefore insulting people because of their look is unacceptable. For example, making fun of someone because they have a longer than normal nose or particularly big eyes is impolite. Making faces at other people to make them feel bad is indecent and should not be done.

One of the most important tools for agreeable communication is favorable listening skills. Such skills not only create rapport but add to the character of person as well. Achieving this requires that one does not interrupt the partner during a conversation. Maintaining eye contact is necessary to show that indeed you keen and have interest in the talk. Such manners are vital tools for growing up and should be taught to a child as early as possible.

The bottom line is that etiquette for children is a very important aspect of their growth that should be taken care of right from the time they start becoming aware of their environment. It is a value that will determine to a great extent the nature of their future relationships. For this reason, everybody needs to participate actively in their upbringing and not to leave everything to parents.
