By Ines Flores

It is important to ensure healthy relationship between the client and the therapists as this is fundamental in promoting productive therapeutic processes. Therapy abuse refers to use unbalance power existing between the counselor and client to exploit, manipulate as well as control their client for personal gains rather than the interest of the client. This often occurs in divergent forms for example, abandoning the client, engaging into unethical conducts, encouraging dependency among others.

This can occur in different forms such as where the client is encouraged into doing activities which are not at the best of their interest. Where they encourage dependency, takes advantage of their vulnerability, abandoning clients and engaging in unethical conducts with their clients.

During counseling process the counselee often have a significant amount as well as influence over their clients thereby making the therapeutic relationship imbalance. Client always respects the opinion and appreciates the guidance of their counselors. In some cases they are perceived as parents to client who had experienced childhood neglect and abuse. That is, the approval, validation and acceptance of opinion are replaced with what they did not receive during childhood. In addition, adult who had previously experienced childhood abuse are a higher risk of being abused in a therapeutic relationship.

Research indicates that, if a client was abused or abandoned child, they are more likely never to develop self-worth, self-esteem and appropriate boundaries. In the event that a person has not developed above things they are more likely to be a target for adult abuse. Notably, such individuals who have experienced an abuse in the past might not be able to distinguish between a violation and therapeutic process.

According to various research findings, abused or abandoned children are likely not to develop self-esteem, appropriate boundaries and self-worth. However, if a client has not developed such things they are prone to be target for abuse. Since, they have experienced an abuse in the past, they might not be able to distinguish between therapeutic and violation process.

One can easily tell that they are being abused by the service providers, for instance, unprofessional activities, humiliation, intimidation, degrading, making erotic or sexual suggestive comments that are most likely to intimidate their clients among other activities. This makes it necessary to seek such services from alternative service providers.

One might be wondering about where can seek help in case of such problems. You need to talk to a friend, parent or spouse in the event of such occurrence. You can also seek information from the websites about individuals or organizations that can help in such situations. One can also seek another therapist. In addition, you can contact legal counsel, or file a board complaint or talk to the police.

Most importantly, therapeutic process often involves assisting the client in dealing with their problems. This therefore, implies that if professionally trained individuals who are not experienced and licensed to provide such services are not engaged, quality outcome might not be achieved. This is instrumental in improving quality service to clients.
