The Alchemist- the book is written by Paulo Coelho about a journey by a shepherd into the pyramids of Egypt. He seeks timeless treasures but beneath the physical journey is the search for his own personal legend. It is about omens and the search for individual purpose in life. The title is valuable to everyone regardless of religion.

The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living- Dalai Lama exhibited perpetual happiness amidst the turmoil that has locked Tibet for years. This is what inspired Howard Cutler to write this book and skew it towards a western audience. Howard demonstrates the reality that happiness comes from the mind and not physical possessions.

The New Earth: Awakening Your Purpose- Tolle Eckhart examines how the ego can stop you from achieving the happiness you long for. He takes the discussion away from wealth and defines success as achieving personal goals and finding happiness. The laws outlined include karma-cause and effect as well as dharma which is about your purpose in life. It taps significantly into the ancient teachings and Chopra has managed to package them for a western audience.

The Road Less Traveled- this book is written by a psychiatrist called Scott Peck and was published in 1978. It makes references to psychiatry and Christian teachings. He highlights how discipline, love and grace are essential in forming a fulfilled person.
