By Katina Brady

Different events in life and milestones can be celebrated in different ways. Decorations are often a way to signify such events and a flower wreath is usually one such item of decoration. It can be seen almost everywhere from simple home decor to religious times of year to seasonal festivals. It is also commonly seen at funerals.

There are a number of festivals and celebrations around the world to welcome spring. At such festivals, such as May Day and the maypole, wreaths are often used as headpieces made with specific flora. In European celebrations, the garland actually become a prize that is placed on top a pole during the event and young men are then picked to have a race. Whoever climbs up and retrieves the garland first is the winner and gets to wear the crown.

Religious holidays or times of year is when this piece could be used as decoration, usually hanging on the front door to welcome visitors. No matter what the occasion, is there is a place for some type of wreath. At Easter time, wreaths don't have to be made of flowers, but could be made using objects such as plastic eggs to symbolize the occasion.

If using wreaths as a symbol, for example, of spring, you should look at which flowers are commonly associated with such. Springtime flora is often daisies, daffodils or tulips. Violets can be seen later on in spring as summer approaches, as we as pansies.

You would undoubtedly have seen poinsettias around Christmas time, and these flowers are now being made into wreaths to hang on the door or in the home in celebration during December. You can use one completely made of flowers for a real impact of red colour. Alternatively, you may choose to mix the poinsettias with some greenery for a fuller effect. You could also just use the poinsettia flower as an accent on a wreath that is all green.

There are flowers that have a natural association with death. Consequently, these particular flowers will be seen most at funerals and often they will be in a wreath form. A flower like a carnation is very common, and white lilies are also something you might see. White flowers represent eternal life.

Some flora is chosen by scent and not by visual aesthetic when it comes to funerals. This is because long ago, dead bodies emitted a bad odour after a while and this smell needed to be masked as much as possible. These days, methods have been developed to preserve a body's condition until it is buried.

Floral garlands are easily bought at a store or on the Internet. It is also possible to make one at home, once the necessary materials have been purchased. It may take some patience and a little bit of skill to decorate a base with live flowers or even dried ones, as they are fragile. Alternatively, false flowers will give a great look that will last all year.
