Celebrate Every Day With Weird National Holidays

By Angel Dudley

A holiday is something that almost everybody loves. Official ones like Christmas or the 4th of July mean that you can have the day off. In the United States, just about every day is an unofficial holiday too, each one celebrating something different. While there are days that are dedicated to serious causes, there are also some days that are rather strange. With weird national holidays you can celebrate every day with your tongue placed very firmly in your cheek.

Some days are set aside for good causes. For example, on January 15 you may celebrate Humanitarian Day by doing something that will help make the world a better place. July 18 is International Nelson Mandela Day, where you need to devote only 67 minutes of your time to doing good, in recognition of the 67 years of service Nelson Mandela gave to humanity. You'll also find days dedicated to specific causes, like homeless animals, senior citizens or people married to a Scorpio.

You'll find many a holiday to appreciate a certain group of people, from your local pharmacist to disc jockeys and even the weatherman. Some of these days are there to celebrate some very, very important figures, like dragons or the tooth fairy. There's even a Name Your PC Day for that inanimate object that often seems to have a mind of its own.

Education is an important issue and some days are perfect for learning something new. World Book Day may get you reading while Kid Inventors' Day may inspire you. January 11 is the perfect time to learn how to say your name in Morse code and on April 23 you can talk like Shakespeare.

Think of anything edible and there's probably a holiday for it. Pies, Slurpees, beans, tortilla chips, junk food and red apples are only some of the foodstuffs that have their own holidays. If you can't pick a favorite, have them all on January 2, which is National Buffet Day. Another solution is to wait for December 16, the day for anything chocolate-covered.

If you love music, you'll want to celebrate this fact. For example, you may want to celebrate Saxophone Day by listening to some jazz or soul. Violin Day is perfect for the soothing sounds of strings. Also spare a thought for those artists that never quite made it big with National One-hit Wonder Day.

In case you never knew this, the sport of curling is considered cool and there is a day to remind you of the fact. You'll also find special days for playing games, whether you like trivia or cards. If solving puzzles are your thing, you'll be happy to know that there's a day for that activity too.

You may find calendars of weird national holidays such as Talk Like A Pirate Day online. After all, it's useful to know when International Moment of Frustration Scream Day is. One day that you'll definitely want to mark on your calendar is March 10, which is International Day of Awesomeness.
